Ohhhh, I see what you getting at; don't they need more of that crap that the Dog Food Companies are cooking up and adding all that garbage too?
ABSOLUTELY --- NO! That's why I do what I've been doing with the protein broth and rice and my own veggies; what they cook up and use to make the dog food can't be trusted - period. That 'Crude Fiber' printed on the sacks of dog food is GARBAGE - like bones/brains and other organ meats that can retain harmful antibiotics and bacteria from the 'downer cattle & horses'...
Since my 2 older dogs are having some arthritis issues they are getting a joint supplement tablet weekly but that's it - except for their 8 month heart guard tablet {April - November}...

Isn't brown rice a grain? I thought grains were bad for dogs.
I still don't know what you mix the brown rice and veggies with. Or is all they eat the brown rice and veggies?

Heeeey, what have I been typing about the 'BROTH'??? I use either chicken or beef...other people prefer to use lamb or pork --- all broth {sans the seasoning & high sodium} would serve your pet well.
What I cook up: weekly
1 bag of brown &/or wild rice 1 quart of beef or chicken broth {sans the seasoning} 4 cups of shredded carrots {raw or cooked} my dogs eat raw carrots as treats 4 cups of thawed green beans {not canned since they have 2 much sodium - raw or cooked} my dogs love these as snacks too --- we also munch on sweet sugar pods in the summer time
Cook up the rice as directed keep it in a sealed container open the quart jug {box} of broth>>>(keep in the refrigerator and date it if necessary}
What I mix together is: 1½ cups of cooked brown rice ½ cup carrots ½ cup green beans ¼ c to ½ c of the broth **** per dog twice a/day - am and pm ***************************************** You would never want to fix this much for your little tiny chi's! They would only need about 1 - ½ cup per feeding twice a day---but feed them in separate little bowls so the fastest eater isn't gobbling up any other bowls of food.
BTW - I'd forgotten about your question regarding the mouth wash: keeping their brushes in the mint flavored mouth wash not only keeps those bristles softened it keeps them sanitized as well - rinse the brush off prior to using it if the odor bothers you little ones --- generally is this isn't an issue for my 3 - they're use to it.
And I do give my Shih-Tsu's s dab of peanut butter when it's time for they're heart-guard tablets --- but not my Lhaso Apso --- he hates PB so I tuck it into a wad of cooked carrot & rice ball and he swallows it right down.

Okay, I see in that recipe there's no meat. Is that all you feed them, the rice and veggies?
Also, I've been researching about the plaque and found this:
I'm going to the store in a bit to get the brown rice, broth and veggies, but I'm going to cook some chicken too, and also to get some of that aloe vera juice.

Btw, I have two small Chi's who are overweight, but I also have a larger Jack Russell terrier who weighs about 25 lbs, then the stray I found who's 7 lbs, but will probably gain weight and be more like 15 lbs.
So I'll need to cook up a large batch of food to last every week.

So I'll need to cook up a large batch of food to last every week. I've never had any of my rescue 'MUTTS' die from 'too much food or starve' but I've had plenty of humans that have 'Killed Their Furry Family Member With Over Feeding'; SMH and then the complain about all of the health problems that their little fur balls suffer from.
Some where along the way we 'humans' have become addicted to those TV commercials about: color of food/snacks that our pets need/look at all those wonderful whole grains that we put in your lovely pets food...UGH And humans will still feed their dogs: hot dogs/baloney/bacon/pizza/slim jim sausages etc., etc., etc.,
I'm not saying that my process for cooking for my dogs isn't tedious or the wonder food that prevents any and all cancers and other aliments that our dogs & cats get but I've had way less issues about the things I could control by feeding them this diet then from all of the "UNKNOWNS" that keep showing up in the pre-packaged food.
I've used a type of mouth treatment {you typed} when a dog has had a gum/decaying tooth issue: diluted peroxide and a little baking soda paste and rub it into the irritated area gently or put it on and gently hold their muzzle closed while rubbing their belly. But never even thought about making it up for their weekly dental hygiene...and I think I've still got a jug of aloe vera in the back of the refrigerator --- Mother used to have 2 Tbls every morning; said it helped clean her 'pipes out'...LOL

I can't get to the store today to get the brown rice. Do you know if dogs can have lentils?

I can't get to the store today to get the brown rice. Do you know if dogs can have lentils? White Rice will work well too...it's just not what I prefer and not what I keep stocked in my pantry! Green Beans are a form of 'Lentil'... But just be aware...some dogs {just like humans} can become hyper if their diet changes drastically to suddenly --- your once couch potato may suddenly become a playful/puppy mad-hatter and you'll be surprised.

I couldn't get to the store yesterday so I boiled some chicken, white rice and carrots. I gave about a cup of the mixture to the small ones and a little over that to the larger ones which looked like a good amount of food. It seemed to satisfy them except the little fat one who's always begging.
The stray that I picked up had very loose stools this morning so I gave him a piece of cheese.
I'm hoping putting more brown rice will be better.
It might actually be cheaper to feed them that way than buying a loaf of Fresh Pet which is $17 a loaf that they can finish within a week.
